My artist name is Ruys and I am trained in fine-art, painting, textiles and Anthropology (graduated as Africanist). The countries in which I worked are Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Ghana and the Netherlands
Africa plays a major role in my work (especially in my work at the zoo - Artis).
I paint as much as possible outside, in Amsterdam at the zoo and in Leiden De Hortus Botanicus. Of late I work regularly in "the land mound" North-East Friesland, where I experience the same feeling of space as in Africa. There I make water colour paintings and the first layers of my oil painting which I finish at my studio at home.
I am teaching model sketching at the Centrum van Beeldende Kunst, the former Zondagsschilders and I am a member of two artists' associations, namely, De Onafhangkelijken and St. Lucas.
